Ask a Mitigation Specialist, a resource program that allows defenders to meet directly and privately with a mitigation specialist for specific technical assistance. Alicia Amezcua-Rodriguez

Alicia Amezcua-Rodriguez has represented individuals facing the death penalty since 2004. She is currently a program attorney with the Mexican Capital Legal Assistance Program and resource counsel for the Texas Regional Habeas Assistance and Training program. She is also a bilingual and bicultural mitigation specialist, specializing in developing mitigation evidence in capital cases involving foreign nationals.

Ms. Amezcua-Rodriguez graduated from New York University School of Law in 1998. Upon graduation, she received a two-year Soros Criminal Justice Fellowship. As a Soros Fellow, she implemented a project at the Legal Aid Society’s Juvenile Rights Division aimed at enhancing the representation of juveniles facing delinquency charges in New York State Family Court. From 2001-2004, she served as law clerk to the Honorable Judith Lieb in New York State Criminal Court.

Beth Cahill

Beth is a mitigation specialist in private practice in New York, NY. Since 2007, she and her partner, Melissa Lang, have conducted mitigation investigations at both the trial and post-conviction levels in state and federal jurisdictions across the United States. Most recently, she was a team member in the successful representation of Sayfullo Saipov in the Southern District of New York. She has served as a faculty member in federal and statewide training sessions and has written about the death penalty and mitigation issues. From 2008 to 2011, she was a member of the Executive Committee of the National Alliance of Sentencing Advocates and Mitigation Specialists (NASAMS). Before entering the field of mitigation work, Ms. Cahill earned her Master’s Degree in Forensic Psychology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, underwent pre-doctoral training at Florida State University, and completed an externship with the Bureau of Prisons.
