The Mitigation Skill-Building Training: Writing Stories for Change is designed for attorneys and other defense team members and is led by Dr. Jill Patterson, a nationally recognized expert in narrative defense and Professor of English at Texas Tech University. The program also includes debrief sessions that provide opportunities to discuss questions, reinforce key concepts, and strengthen persuasive legal writing skills. Attendees will view practical examples from criminal defense mitigation submissions to illustrate effective narrative techniques.
Through plenary sessions and interactive, skills-based workshops, participants will understand how to craft compelling mitigation narratives for sentencing and advocacy. The training focuses on transforming evidence—including records, interviews, photographs, and other materials—into persuasive client-centered narratives that resonate with judges and other decision-makers. Participants will develop strategies for integrating case facts and legal principles into clear, persuasive stories that support equitable outcomes for their clients.
